Description
Overview of the medicine
Xenoderm 0.05% Cream is a potent topical corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation, redness, and itching associated with various skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once daily. Treatment should not exceed 3 weeks without medical review. Max 50g per week.
Elderly
Same as adults, but use with caution and monitor for skin thinning or other local adverse effects, especially with prolonged use.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption; however, caution is advised in severe cases with extensive skin involvement.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub in gently until absorbed. Do not apply to open wounds or broken skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Do not cover the treated area with occlusive dressings unless specifically advised by a doctor.
Mechanism of Action
It binds to glucocorticoid receptors in skin cells, inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and suppressing immune responses, thereby reducing inflammation and itching.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects are typically observed within hours to a few days of initiation of therapy, with peak improvement usually seen within 1-2 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via bile and urine as inactive metabolites, if absorbed systemically.
Half life
If absorbed systemically, the half-life is variable, generally short due to rapid metabolism and excretion.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical application. Absorption can increase with occlusive dressings, on damaged skin, or with prolonged extensive use.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites, if absorbed systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients
- Rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral dermatitis
- Pruritus without inflammation
- Perianal and genital pruritus
- Untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
- Tuberculosis of the skin
- Vaccination reactions
Drug Interactions
Other Topical Preparations
Avoid concomitant use of other topical corticosteroids or products that may cause irritation, unless directed by a physician.
Systemic Drug Interactions
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely with topical Xenoderm 0.05% Cream due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Close the cap tightly after use.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause acute systemic effects. However, prolonged or excessive use of corticosteroids can lead to suppression of pituitary-adrenal function, resulting in secondary adrenal insufficiency, and manifestations of hypercorticism, including Cushing's syndrome. Local overdose may cause skin atrophy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and under strict medical supervision. Avoid large areas, prolonged use, or application to broken skin. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor.

Clinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have established the efficacy and safety profile of topical corticosteroids for the treatment of various inflammatory dermatoses, demonstrating significant reduction in symptoms like itching and erythema.
Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring is required for typical topical use. In cases of extensive or prolonged use, especially in children, monitoring of adrenal function (e.g., plasma cortisol levels) may be considered.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize patient education regarding appropriate application technique, duration of therapy, and potential local adverse effects (e.g., skin thinning).
- Advise against use on the face, groin, or axillae for prolonged periods.
- Regularly reassess the need for continued corticosteroid therapy and consider step-down or alternative treatments when appropriate.
- Be vigilant for signs of infection or systemic absorption, especially in children or with occlusive use.
Patient Guidelines
- Use Xenoderm 0.05% Cream exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not use it on your face, groin, or armpits unless specifically directed by your doctor.
- Avoid prolonged use, especially on the face or in skin folds, as it can lead to skin thinning.
- Do not cover the treated area with bandages or other dressings unless instructed by your doctor.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the cream.
- Do not use this cream for any condition other than for which it was prescribed.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose.
Driving Precautions
Xenoderm 0.05% Cream is for topical use and is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good skin hygiene and moisturize your skin with a non-medicated moisturizer.
- Identify and avoid triggers that worsen your skin condition (e.g., certain soaps, detergents, allergens).
- Wear loose, breathable clothing to minimize irritation.
