Overview of the medicine
Cefuroxime Axetil is a broad-spectrum second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg to 500 mg twice daily, depending on the infection severity. For severe infections, 500 mg twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required unless severe renal impairment.

Dosage adjustment needed for severe renal impairment (e.g., CrCl < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Shake well before use.

Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.

Contraindications

Probenecid
May increase cefuroxime levels.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (use alternative birth control).
Antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs
May decrease bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil (take 2 hours before or after).
Aminoglycosides/Loop Diuretics
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.

Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Once constituted, store in a refrigerator and use within 7-10 days.
Overdose
Symptoms may include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is supportive, hemodialysis may be considered.
