Description
Overview of the medicine
Ximocef 20 mg Pediatric Drop contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including ear, nose, throat, urinary tract, and chest infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for pediatric drops. Consult physician for adult Cefixime dosage (usually 200-400 mg once or twice daily).
Elderly
Not applicable for pediatric drops. Elderly dosage similar to adults but adjust for renal function.
Renal_impairment
For children with creatinine clearance < 20 mL/min, the dose should be reduced by 50%.
How to Take
Administer orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided calibrated dropper for accurate measurement of the prescribed dose. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis and death. It shows bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are generally achieved within 2-6 hours post-oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via urine (approximately 50% of absorbed dose) and bile.
Half life
The average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food does not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized in the body. Some active metabolites may be formed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Concurrent use may increase prothrombin time and INR. Close monitoring and dosage adjustment of anticoagulants may be necessary.
Probenecid
Increases Cefixime plasma concentrations by decreasing its renal clearance.
Carbamazepine
Increased plasma levels of Carbamazepine have been reported when co-administered with Cefixime.
Oral Contraceptives
May rarely reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise patients to use an additional contraceptive method.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and possibly seizures. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be helpful in removing the drug from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, Cefixime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
