Description
Overview of the medicine
Xiomox contains Amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg every 8 hours, or 500-875 mg every 12 hours depending on infection severity.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly via renal excretion (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, about 70-90% bioavailable.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin or any component of the formulation
- Previous history of severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect, monitor INR.
Probenecid
Increases amoxicillin levels and prolongs its half-life.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of skin rash.
Methotrexate
Decreased methotrexate clearance, potentially increasing toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (rarely significant).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep reconstituted suspension refrigerated (2-8°C) and discard after 7-14 days.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances in fluid and electrolyte balance. In severe cases, crystalluria and renal impairment may occur. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin from the circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B in pregnancy. Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation, but use with caution and only if clearly needed.
