Description
Overview of the medicine
Xynor contains Norethisterone, a synthetic progestogen. It is primarily used to treat various menstrual disorders such as heavy periods, painful periods, irregular periods, and premenstrual tension. It can also be used in the management of endometriosis and certain breast conditions, and sometimes as a component in hormone replacement therapy or contraception.
Uses & Indications
Dosage

Elderly
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required in case of impaired hepatic or renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be necessary.
How to Take
Oral administration, taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Norethisterone acts as a synthetic progestogen, mimicking the effects of natural progesterone. It primarily affects the endometrium, causing it to change from a proliferative to a secretory phase. When used for contraception, it inhibits ovulation by suppressing the release of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) from the pituitary gland. It also increases the viscosity of cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate, and alters the endometrium to prevent implantation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects on endometrium seen within hours to days; ovulation inhibition requires sustained use.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in urine (50-70%) and feces (20-40%) as metabolites.
Half life
Elimination half-life ranges from 5 to 10 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via reduction and conjugation.
