Description
Overview of the medicine
Zacort 6 mg tablet contains Deflazacort, a corticosteroid used to treat a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 6-90 mg daily, adjusted according to the condition and patient response. For DMD, initial dosage 0.9 mg/kg/day.
Elderly
Caution advised, lower doses may be required due to increased sensitivity and potential comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment generally needed, but monitor carefully.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. It is recommended to take it in the morning.
Mechanism of Action
Deflazacort is a glucocorticoid that binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, forming a complex that translocates to the nucleus and modulates gene expression. This leads to anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and altering immune cell function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, typically within hours to days depending on condition.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine (approximately 70%) and feces (approximately 30%) as metabolites.
Half life
The active metabolite has a plasma half-life of approximately 1.5-2 hours.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, rapidly converted to its active metabolite, 21-desacetyl deflazacort.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to its active metabolite, 21-desacetyl deflazacort, by esterases. Further metabolized by hydroxylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Systemic fungal infections
- Hypersensitivity to deflazacort or any excipients
Drug Interactions

Insulin, oral hypoglycemic agents
May reduce hypoglycemic effects, requiring dose adjustment.
Rifampicin, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital
May reduce the efficacy of deflazacort.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare. Symptoms may include exaggerated side effects. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
