Description
Overview of the medicine
Zedex syrup is a combination medication used to relieve symptoms of common cold, flu, allergies, and other respiratory illnesses. It helps to suppress cough, reduce nasal congestion, and alleviate sneezing and watery eyes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times a day, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required.
How to Take
Orally. Administer with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Dextromethorphan acts on the cough center in the medulla to elevate the cough threshold. Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a decongestant by vasoconstricting blood vessels in the nasal passages. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is a first-generation antihistamine that blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing allergic symptoms like sneezing and runny nose.

Dextromethorphan: 2-4 hours (extensive metabolizers), up to 24 hours (poor metabolizers); Phenylephrine: 2-3 hours; Chlorpheniramine: 12-43 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally. Dextromethorphan undergoes rapid and extensive first-pass metabolism. Phenylephrine has variable oral bioavailability. Chlorpheniramine is readily absorbed.

Dextromethorphan: Hepatic (CYP2D6); Phenylephrine: Liver and gut wall (MAO); Chlorpheniramine: Hepatic.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Patients currently taking or within 14 days of stopping Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
- Severe hypertension or coronary artery disease (due to phenylephrine)
- Closed-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy (due to chlorpheniramine)
Drug Interactions
MAOIs
Concomitant use with MAOIs can lead to hypertensive crisis and severe adverse reactions.
Antihypertensive drugs
Phenylephrine may reduce the effect of antihypertensive drugs.
CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives)
Increased sedation due to chlorpheniramine.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, agitation, hallucinations, tachycardia, hypertension, and convulsions. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered in recent overdose.
