Description
Overview of the medicine
Zenicef 100 mg Suspension is an antibiotic medication containing Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and ear infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically recommended for adults in this suspension form. Adult dosage for Cefixime is usually 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours (tablet/capsule).
Elderly
Not typically recommended for elderly in this suspension form. Dose adjustments based on renal function may be necessary.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min). In such cases, the dosage should be reduced.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally using the provided measuring spoon or oral syringe. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of medication even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. It is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion) as unchanged drug; a small portion is excreted via bile.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Absorption is not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized. No active metabolites identified.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase cefixime levels.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma levels and prolong its half-life by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine levels, requiring monitoring.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time (INR), requiring dose adjustment and monitoring.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard unused portion after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
No specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be indicated. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are generally not effective in removing cefixime. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts, use with caution during lactation.
