Description
Overview of the medicine
Zenvit-C is a vitamin C supplement containing Ascorbic Acid. It is essential for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It's involved in many body functions, including formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the proper functioning of the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth. It is an important antioxidant.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 tablet (500 mg) once daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, or as directed by a physician.
Renal_impairment
Caution advised; consult physician. Dosage may need adjustment in severe cases.
How to Take
Oral administration. Tablets can be swallowed whole with water. Chewable tablets should be chewed before swallowing. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals. It is a cofactor for several enzymes, including those involved in collagen synthesis (prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase), carnitine synthesis, and neurotransmitter synthesis. It also aids in iron absorption by reducing ferric iron to ferrous iron.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Nutritional and therapeutic effects are gradual, not immediate.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys, mostly as unchanged drug when plasma levels exceed renal threshold; otherwise, as metabolites.
Half life
Dependent on body stores; approximately 8-40 days. In deficiency, it's shorter.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine. Absorption efficiency decreases with increasing dose.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive metabolites like dehydroascorbic acid and oxalic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid
- •Severe renal impairment (especially with high doses, due to risk of oxalate stones)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Large doses of Vitamin C may interfere with anticoagulant effect.
Deferoxamine
May enhance iron toxicity, particularly cardiotoxicity.
Aluminum-containing antacids
May increase aluminum absorption, especially in renal insufficiency.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
Overdose
Acute overdose is generally not life-threatening due to its water-soluble nature. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and a theoretical risk of oxalate kidney stones with very high, prolonged doses. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when taken at recommended daily allowances. High doses should be avoided unless medically indicated.
