Description
Overview of the medicine
Ziron-F is a combination supplement containing Ferrous Fumarate and Folic Acid, primarily used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia and megaloblastic anemia, especially during pregnancy and lactation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One tablet once daily, preferably after a meal, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution should be exercised in elderly patients with comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is generally not required, but monitor patients with severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration, preferably with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not take with antacids, tea, or coffee.
Mechanism of Action
Ferrous Fumarate provides elemental iron, crucial for the formation of hemoglobin and oxygen transport. Folic Acid is vital for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and proper fetal development.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, improvement usually seen within weeks, full effect in months.
Excretion
Excess iron is primarily excreted via feces. Folic acid is excreted mainly via urine and some via feces.
Half life
Iron is incorporated into hemoglobin and stored. Folic acid has a variable half-life, typically a few hours to days.
Absorption
Iron is absorbed primarily in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Folic acid is absorbed mainly in the small intestine.
Metabolism
Iron is not metabolized; it is used and stored. Folic acid is metabolized in the liver to its active forms.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ferrous Fumarate, Folic Acid, or any excipients
- Hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis (iron overload disorders)
- Non-iron deficiency anemia (e.g., pernicious anemia without B12 correction)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce iron absorption. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Levothyroxine
Iron may impair levothyroxine absorption. Administer at separate times.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Iron can decrease absorption of these antibiotics. Separate by 2-4 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of iron overdose include severe gastrointestinal upset, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, followed by pallor, cyanosis, shock, and potentially liver damage or death. Seek immediate medical attention. Folic acid overdose is generally considered non-toxic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Highly recommended for preventing and treating anemia during pregnancy and lactation. Essential for fetal development and maternal health. Consult physician for appropriate dosage.
