Description
Overview of the medicine
Zoana 500 mg Tablet contains Metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine. It is used to treat various bacterial and parasitic infections in different parts of the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg twice daily for 5-7 days depending on the infection. For specific infections, refer to physician's instructions.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution is advised due to potential age-related decrease in renal/hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min). Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with food or milk to minimize stomach upset. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole enters bacterial and parasitic cells, where it is reduced by electron transport proteins to form reactive nitro free radicals. These radicals damage DNA and other biomolecules, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects usually observed within 24-48 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine (60-80%), with a small amount excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-11 hours (average 8 hours).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, peak plasma concentrations typically occur 1-2 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by oxidation and glucuronide conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives
- First trimester of pregnancy (unless essential)

Disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, flushing, tachycardia) may occur. Avoid alcohol during and for at least 3 days after treatment.
Lithium
May increase serum lithium levels, leading to lithium toxicity. Monitor lithium levels.
Warfarin
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing bleeding risk. INR monitoring required.
Disulfiram
May cause psychotic reactions. Do not administer metronidazole to patients who have taken disulfiram within the last 14 days.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, ataxia, seizures, and peripheral neuropathy. Management is supportive and symptomatic; no specific antidote.
