Description
Overview of the medicine
Zovia Silver is a combination oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two female hormones, an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (ethynodiol diacetate), that work primarily by preventing ovulation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Take one tablet daily at the same time each day for 21 or 28 consecutive days, depending on the pack type. Follow the instructions on the package carefully.
Elderly
Not indicated for postmenopausal women. Contraceptives are generally not recommended for use in women over 35 who smoke.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is typically required, but use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential fluid retention.
How to Take
Take orally with a full glass of water, with or without food, at the same time each day. If taking a 28-day pack, take inert pills on the last 7 days to maintain the routine. Do not skip pills.
Mechanism of Action
This combination oral contraceptive primarily prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation. It also causes changes in the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus, and alters the endometrium, making it less receptive to implantation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Contraceptive protection usually begins after 7 consecutive days of active pill use in the first cycle.
Excretion
Metabolites of both hormones are primarily excreted in urine and feces.
Half life
Ethynodiol diacetate: approximately 5-14 hours (active metabolite). Ethinyl estradiol: approximately 6-20 hours.
Absorption
Both ethynodiol diacetate and ethinyl estradiol are rapidly and well absorbed after oral administration.
Metabolism
Both hormones undergo extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver. Ethynodiol diacetate is rapidly deacetylated to norethindrone. Ethinyl estradiol is metabolized via aromatic hydroxylation.
