Description
Overview of the medicine
Zoxan 100 mg Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It is effective against infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin, bones, and joints.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 250-750 mg twice daily, depending on infection severity and type. For suspension, dosage is adjusted accordingly, often 5-15 ml (100 mg/5ml) twice daily.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with reduced renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in patients with significant renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min).
How to Take
Oral administration. Shake the suspension well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products or antacids containing magnesium/aluminum/calcium, or iron/zinc supplements, as these can reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily renal (40-50% unchanged drug in urine); some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 4 hours (range 3-5 hours)
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; oral bioavailability is about 70-80%.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism (10-20%) to less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- •Concomitant administration with tizanidine.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Enhanced anticoagulant effect, increased bleeding risk.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis/tendon rupture.
Antacids/Mineral supplements
Reduced absorption of ciprofloxacin. Administer 2-4 hours apart.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 14 days.
Overdose
Symptoms include reversible renal toxicity. Management involves emptying the stomach by induced vomiting or gastric lavage, followed by administration of activated charcoal. Maintain adequate hydration. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing ciprofloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
