Overview of the medicine
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid, treating conditions like GERD, ulcers, and preventing acid-related damage.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20-40 mg once daily, depending on indication (e.g., 20 mg daily for maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis).
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary for mild to moderate impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, at least one hour before a meal. Swallow whole; do not chew or crush. For patients unable to swallow, tablets can be dispersed in non-carbonated water.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole works by irreversibly binding to and inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles, or any components of the formulation
- •Concomitant use with nelfinavir
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased INR and bleeding risk.
Clopidogrel
Reduced antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate levels, potentially toxicity.
Nelfinavir/Atazanavir
Decreased plasma levels of antivirals, reducing efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptomatic and supportive treatment. There is no specific antidote for esomeprazole overdose. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution and only if potential benefit outweighs risk.
