Description
Overview of the medicine
Adorex 5 mg Suspension is an antihistamine containing Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It is generally well-tolerated and less sedating compared to older antihistamines, making it suitable for pediatric use.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically recommended for adults in this specific suspension formulation; adults usually take Fexofenadine tablets.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally necessary for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
In adult patients with impaired renal function, a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended. For pediatric patients with impaired renal function, the recommended starting dose is 15 mg (3 mL) once daily for children 6 months to <2 years and 30 mg (6 mL) once daily for children 2 to 11 years.
How to Take
Oral administration. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or oral syringe to ensure accurate dosing. May be taken with or without food, but avoid fruit juices.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-blocker. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing the actions of histamine, which is responsible for allergic symptoms like sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Mainly excreted in feces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 11%) as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 14 hours (ranging from 11-16 hours)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 1-3 hours. Absorption is reduced when taken with fruit juices.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized (approximately 5% of a dose); primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of the excipients in the suspension.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin or Ketoconazole
Concomitant use with these drugs may result in increased Fexofenadine plasma concentrations. However, no difference in the incidence of adverse events has been observed in clinical trials.
Antacids (containing aluminum and magnesium)
May reduce the absorption of Fexofenadine. It is recommended to separate the administration of Fexofenadine and antacids by approximately 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk in small amounts; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
