Description
Overview of the medicine
Afixime 25 mg Pediatric Drop contains Cefixime, a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for pediatric drop; adult formulations are available.
Elderly
Not applicable for pediatric drop; elderly dosage should follow adult guidelines with renal adjustment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min). Consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with food to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Use the calibrated dropper provided for accurate dosing. Shake the suspension well before each use.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 2-6 hours (peak plasma concentration)
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys (approximately 50% unchanged in urine), and some biliary excretion.
Half life
About 3-4 hours
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food can delay absorption but does not significantly alter the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin (cross-reactivity can occur).
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase cefixime peak plasma concentration and AUC.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant administration may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Store the reconstituted suspension in the refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by dialysis. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

Doctor Notes
- Confirm bacterial infection before prescribing; cefixime is not effective against viral infections.
- Advise parents on proper measurement and administration techniques for pediatric drops.
- Educate on completing the full course to prevent antibiotic resistance.
