Description
Overview of the medicine
Almoxil 125 mg Suspension contains Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is commonly prescribed for children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-500 mg every 8 hours, but for suspension, usually used in children.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is recommended for severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min).
How to Take
Oral administration. Shake the suspension well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via tubular secretion and glomerular filtration.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken orally. Bioavailability is about 70-90%.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism, mostly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, other penicillins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to another beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., cephalosporins, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time; increased risk of bleeding.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of skin rash, especially in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal tubular secretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (though clinical significance is debated, advise additional barrier method).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. Store reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-14 days (check specific product label). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. Renal impairment can lead to crystalluria. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis may be used in cases of severe renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor for rash or diarrhea in infant.
