Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with viscid or excessive mucus. It helps to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
30 mg two to three times daily. For sustained release capsules, 75 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in severe renal impairment. Consultation with a physician is recommended.
How to Take
Oral administration. Tablets can be taken with or without food. Syrup and drops can be mixed with food or drink.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by stimulating serous glandular secretion and reducing the viscosity of mucus by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides. It also enhances mucociliary clearance and stimulates pulmonary surfactant production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 30 minutes of oral administration.
Excretion
Approximately 90% is excreted renally, mainly as metabolites.
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and almost complete absorption from oral administration. Absolute bioavailability is 70-80% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to various inactive metabolites, mainly by conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ambroxol or any component of the formulation
- History of severe allergic reactions
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin)
Ambroxol can increase the penetration of certain antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. Management is primarily symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Excreted in breast milk, so use with caution during lactation. Consult a physician.
