Description
Overview of the medicine
Amotid 500 mg capsule is a penicillin-class antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in the body, such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and dental infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-500 mg every 8 hours or 500-875 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. Maximum daily dose is 4.5 grams.
Elderly
Generally same as adults, but dose adjustment may be required considering renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction or increased dosing interval is necessary for creatinine clearance <30 mL/min.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the entire capsule with water; do not break or chew. Complete the full course as prescribed by your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It disrupts the peptidoglycan synthesis of bacteria, which weakens the bacterial cell wall, causing it to rupture and ultimately killing the bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via urine, with a small amount excreted via bile.
Half life
1-1.5 hours
Absorption
Amoxicillin is rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Food does not significantly affect its absorption.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites (e.g., penicilloic acid).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known allergy to penicillin or any other beta-lactam antibiotics
- Infectious mononucleosis
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding.
Allopurinol
Concomitant use with allopurinol may increase the risk of skin rash.
Methotrexate

Oral Contraceptives
May decrease the efficacy of some oral contraceptives in certain cases.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry and cool place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may cause gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). Convulsions may occur in patients with impaired renal function. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and hemodialysis may be performed if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy (Pregnancy Category B). Caution should be exercised in breastfeeding mothers, as it can pass into breast milk. Consult a doctor before use.
