Description
Overview of the medicine
Amovix 125 mg suspension contains Amoxicillin, which is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults usually require higher strength formulations (e.g., 250 mg or 500 mg capsules/tablets) at 250-500 mg every 8 hours. For children, the typical dosage for 125mg/5ml suspension is as follows:
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally needed unless significant renal impairment. Refer to adult dosing guidelines.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-30 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 12 hours. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
For oral use. Reconstitute the dry powder with boiled and cooled water as per instructions on the label. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a bactericidal agent that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It interferes with the transpeptidation process in the biosynthesis of peptidoglycan, which is a vital component of bacterial cell walls.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by active tubular secretion and glomerular filtration.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken on an empty stomach. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in about 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or any component of the formulation.
- History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins).
- Infectious mononucleosis (due to increased risk of rash).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs Amoxicillin blood levels by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash when co-administered with Amoxicillin.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise use of alternative contraception.
Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Tetracyclines, Macrolides, Chloramphenicol
Bacteriostatic antibiotics may interfere with the bactericidal effect of penicillin.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. After reconstitution, store the suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C); do not freeze. Discard any unused portion after the specified period.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rarely, convulsions. In case of overdose, discontinue medication and initiate symptomatic and supportive treatment. Gastric lavage and charcoal administration may be considered. Hemodialysis can remove Amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Amoxicillin is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor the infant for diarrhea or candidiasis.

Doctor Notes
- Always confirm patient's history of penicillin allergy before prescribing.
- Educate parents/caregivers on proper reconstitution, dosing, and storage of the suspension.
- Advise patients to complete the entire course of medication, even if symptoms improve.
- Monitor for signs of allergic reactions, pseudomembranous colitis, or superinfections.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence and development of antibiotic resistance.
- Shake the suspension well before each use to ensure proper dosing.
- Store the reconstituted suspension in the refrigerator and discard any unused portion after the recommended period (usually 7-14 days).
