Description
Overview of the medicine
Apimox 125 mg Suspension contains Amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
General adult dosage: 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, or 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours, depending on infection severity. For Apimox 125 mg suspension, typically 10-20 ml (250-500 mg) every 8 hours.
Children
Pediatric dosage: 20 to 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 hours or 12 hours. For Apimox 125 mg suspension: 2.5-5 ml (62.5-125 mg) three times daily for children 1-3 years; 5-10 ml (125-250 mg) three times daily for children 3-10 years. Dosing should be individualized based on age, weight, and severity of infection.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min).
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use to ensure uniform dosing. Use a calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the bacterial cell wall, which are essential for cell wall synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations usually occur within 1 to 2 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via tubular secretion and glomerular filtration; a small amount is excreted in the feces.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration; absorption is not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, any other penicillin, or to any of the excipients.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other beta-lactam agent (e.g., cephalosporin, carbapenem).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs amoxicillin blood levels by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
May increase the incidence of skin rash, particularly in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal excretion.
Oral Contraceptives
Amoxicillin may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time; careful monitoring is required.
Storage
Store unreconstituted powder below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2°C-8°C) and discarded after 7-14 days.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and fluid-electrolyte imbalance. In rare cases, convulsions have been reported. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis may be used to remove amoxicillin from the circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Amoxicillin is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but caution is advised.

Amoxicillin has undergone extensive clinical trials since its introduction, demonstrating its efficacy and safety in treating a wide range of bacterial infections across various patient populations. Post-marketing surveillance continues to monitor its effects.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor renal function in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged therapy.
- Monitor complete blood count (CBC) during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Verify penicillin allergy history before prescribing.
- Advise patients on the importance of completing the full course of therapy.
- Consider renal function adjustment for elderly patients and those with kidney impairment.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not save medication for future illnesses or share it with others.
- Shake the suspension well before each use.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
