Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, and pneumonia.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg to 1 g intravenously every 8 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance ≤ 50 mL/min.
How to Take
Administered by intravenous infusion over 15-30 minutes or by intravenous bolus injection over 3-5 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Meropenem is a bactericidal agent that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Drug Interactions
Probenecid

Increased anticoagulant effect.

Overdose
In case of overdose, supportive treatment should be given. Meropenem can be removed by hemodialysis.
