Azalid (Azithromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 3 days OR 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg once daily for 4 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed unless severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal impairment; caution with severe impairment.
How to Take
May be taken with or without food. For better absorption, some sources recommend taking it on an empty stomach.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit.

Side Effects
Contraindications

- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase digoxin levels.
Antacids
May decrease peak plasma levels of azithromycin (take Azalid 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids).
Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effect (monitor INR).
Nelfinavir
May increase azithromycin serum concentrations.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage and general supportive measures are recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised.
