Description
Overview of the medicine
Azinil 1% Eye Drop is an antibiotic medicine used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (an infection of the eye). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause the infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily for 2 days, then one drop once daily for the next 5 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid, and put one drop into the pocket formed. Close your eye gently. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby interfering with the translocation of peptides.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within a few days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Primarily eliminated locally within ocular tissues; minimal systemic excretion.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic use; systemic half-life is long (approximately 68 hours).
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after ophthalmic administration. High concentrations are achieved in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism in ocular tissues.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, any other macrolide antibiotic, or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic Medications
If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical advice. If accidentally applied too much to the eye, rinse with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Systemic absorption after ophthalmic use is minimal. Use with caution in nursing mothers, as it is unknown if azithromycin is excreted in human milk after ophthalmic administration.
