Description
Overview of the medicine
Azinil 500 mg Tablet contains Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most infections, 500 mg once daily for 3 days or 500 mg as a single dose on day 1, then 250 mg once daily for 4 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required unless severe renal or hepatic impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance > 10 mL/min). Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Azinil tablets can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and preventing bacterial growth. It is primarily bacteriostatic.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within 2-3 days of initiation, depending on the infection.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in bile; a small percentage (about 6%) is excreted renally.
Half life
Terminal elimination half-life is 2-4 days due to extensive tissue uptake and slow release.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 37%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily by demethylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use

May decrease peak serum levels of azithromycin. Administer azithromycin at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and general supportive measures.
