Bactacef (Cefixime) is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For adults, the usual dose is 200-400 mg once daily or in two divided doses. Duration depends on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Adjust dose for renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min, the dose should be reduced (e.g., 200 mg once daily).
How to Take
Bactacef can be taken orally with or without food. For suspension, reconstitute with water as directed.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Onset
Antibacterial effect typically observed within hours of administration.
Excretion
Approximately 50-60% of an oral dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food may delay time to peak concentration but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or to any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time and INR, leading to increased bleeding risk.
Probenecid
Increases cefixime plasma concentrations by inhibiting renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels when co-administered.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Supportive therapy should be administered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; use with caution in lactating mothers.
