Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This suspension formulation is typically used for pediatric patients.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in this suspension form. Adult dosage for cefixime usually 200-400 mg daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment for elderly with normal renal function; monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required for creatinine clearance <60 mL/min. For CrCl 21-60 mL/min, 75% of standard dose. For CrCl <20 mL/min, 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake well before use. Measure dose accurately using a measuring spoon or oral syringe.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 2-6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via renal elimination (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 30-50% orally absorbed. Absorption is not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body. Approximately 50% is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR. Monitor coagulation parameters.
Carbamazepine
Increased plasma levels of carbamazepine have been reported when co-administered with cefixime.
Oral Contraceptives
May decrease efficacy of oral contraceptives (theoretical risk, use additional contraception).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store as directed (usually room temperature or refrigerator) and discard after specified period.
