Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200-400 mg once or twice daily, depending on the severity of the infection. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, a single 400 mg dose.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required unless renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance <60 mL/min.
How to Take
Bactazim 200 mg Capsule can be taken orally, with or without food. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.

Onset
Rapid.
Excretion
Primarily via renal excretion (about 50% unchanged in urine) and also via biliary excretion.
Half life
3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed, absorption is not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of anaphylaxis to penicillin antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase cefixime absorption.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may result in increased carbamazepine plasma levels.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is advised.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific antidote exists. Gastric lavage may be indicated. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis do not effectively remove cefixime from the body. Management is symptomatic and supportive.

Pregnancy Category B. Cefixime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Use with caution in nursing mothers; consult a doctor.
