Description
Overview of the medicine
Benprox 500 mg Tablet contains Naproxen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by various conditions such as arthritis, muscle aches, and menstrual cramps.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For pain and inflammation: 250-500 mg twice daily. Maximum daily dose is generally 1250 mg.
Elderly
Start with lower effective doses and monitor renal function. Generally 250 mg once or twice daily.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary. Avoid in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Naproxen inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief usually within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine (approximately 95%) as naproxen, 6-O-desmethylnaproxen, and their conjugates.
Half life
Approximately 12-17 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by demethylation and conjugation to glucuronide.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to naproxen or other NSAIDs
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer

SSRIs (e.g., Fluoxetine)
Increased risk of GI bleeding.
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Reduced diuretic and antihypertensive effects.

Management is symptomatic and supportive; gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered if recent ingestion.
