How to Take
For oral use. Tablets should be swallowed with water, preferably on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hours after food or fruit juice).
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine selectively antagonizes peripheral H1 histamine receptors, thereby preventing the effects of histamine such as itching, swelling, and vasodilation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged, about 67% via feces and 33% via urine. Renal and hepatic impairment do not significantly alter its pharmacokinetics.
Half life
Approximately 13-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Bioavailability is approximately 60%. Food significantly reduces absorption.
Metabolism
Bilastine is not significantly metabolized in humans. It is not an inducer or inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substance bilastine or to any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Grapefruit juice
Significantly reduces the systemic exposure of bilastine. Should not be taken with bilastine.
Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Diltiazem
Co-administration may increase bilastine plasma levels, but this is generally not considered clinically significant.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. There is no specific antidote for bilastine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are limited data on the use of bilastine in pregnant women. Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects. As a precautionary measure, it is preferable to avoid the use of bilastine during pregnancy. It is unknown whether bilastine is excreted in human milk. A decision must be made whether to discontinue breast-feeding or to discontinue/abstain from bilastine therapy taking into account the benefit of breast-feeding for the child and the benefit of therapy for the woman.
