Description
Overview of the medicine
C-3 400 mg Capsule is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the third-generation cephalosporin class, used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours. Dosage should be adjusted based on infection severity and physician's discretion.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, dose should be 300 mg daily. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, dose should be 200 mg daily. Hemodialysis/peritoneal dialysis patients may require dose adjustment.
How to Take
C-3 400 mg Capsule can be taken orally, with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it may be taken with food. Swallow the capsule whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
C-3 inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It is bactericidal in action.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 50-60% of an oral dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-6 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the liver; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to C-3, other cephalosporins, or penicillins.
- History of severe allergic reaction to beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase plasma concentrations of C-3 by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant administration may increase carbamazepine levels.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased prothrombin time/INR, potentially leading to bleeding. Monitor coagulation parameters closely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. C-3 is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in nursing mothers.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of C-3 (Cefixime) in treating various bacterial infections in adults and children. Ongoing post-market surveillance continues to monitor its long-term effects.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor renal function (creatinine clearance) in patients with impaired kidney function or on prolonged therapy.
- Monitor coagulation parameters (PT/INR) in patients concomitantly receiving oral anticoagulants.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to complete the full course of treatment to prevent antibiotic resistance.
- Counsel on potential gastrointestinal side effects and instruct to report severe diarrhea.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the entire course of medication as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent bacterial resistance.
- Do not share this medication with others.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
C-3 is generally not expected to impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or headache, avoid driving or operating machinery.
