Description
Overview of the medicine
Camlor 8 mg Injection contains Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate, a potent synthetic corticosteroid used for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant effects. It is administered parenterally for various acute and severe conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage varies widely based on condition. For inflammation, 0.5-20 mg IM/IV daily. For cerebral edema, initial 10 mg IV, then 4 mg IM/IV every 6 hours.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required, titrate carefully due to increased susceptibility to side effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but monitor fluid and electrolyte balance.
How to Take
Administer intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM). For IV administration, it can be given slowly over 1-4 minutes. Do not inject subcutaneously.
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone binds to glucocorticoid receptors, inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins), thereby reducing inflammation and suppressing immune responses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes (IV), within hours (IM).
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine as inactive metabolites.
Half life
Plasma half-life: 3-4.5 hours; Biological half-life: 36-54 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after IM or IV administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Systemic fungal infections
- Hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone or any component
- Live virus vaccines (when on immunosuppressive doses)
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration.
Oral anticoagulants
Effects may be altered; monitor INR.
Diuretics (potassium-depleting)
Increased risk of hypokalemia.
Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Rifampin
Can decrease Dexamethasone efficacy by inducing liver enzymes.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare. Symptoms may include Cushingoid features, fluid retention, hypertension, and hyperglycemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; gradual withdrawal is necessary after prolonged high-dose therapy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Dexamethasone is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised.
