Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefador 125 mg Pediatric Drop (Cefadroxil) is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for this pediatric formulation. Adult Cefadroxil doses vary by condition.
Elderly
Not applicable for this pediatric formulation. Dosage adjustments for elderly patients with renal impairment are needed for general Cefadroxil.
Children
General pediatric dose is 30 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses (every 12 hours) for most infections. For severe infections, up to 100 mg/kg/day can be used. Maximum dose is 1 g/day. Dosage calculation for 125 mg/5 mL suspension: 30 mg/kg/day means, e.g., for a 10 kg child, 300 mg/day, so 150 mg (6 mL of 125mg/5mL suspension) twice daily.
Renal_impairment
Pediatric dosage adjustment is required based on creatinine clearance and infection severity. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. For pediatric use, shake the reconstituted suspension well before each use. It can be mixed with milk, formula, or juice for easier administration.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. About 90% of the drug is excreted unchanged in urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1.5-2 hours, prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations occurring 1-2 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis, severe skin reaction) due to potential for cross-reactivity.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase and prolong cefadroxil serum levels by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Oral Contraceptives
Rare reports suggest reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives with cephalosporins, although clinical significance is debated.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store unreconstituted powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep the reconstituted suspension refrigerated (2-8°C) and do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. Management is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered within 1-2 hours of ingestion in significant overdose. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefadroxil has not shown evidence of harm in animal studies, but human data are limited. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in small amounts into breast milk; use with caution during lactation and monitor the infant for gastrointestinal disturbances or candidiasis.

YesClinical Trials
Cefadroxil has been extensively studied in numerous clinical trials supporting its efficacy and safety in various bacterial infections, including pediatric populations. Long-standing clinical use further supports its profile.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (e.g., creatinine, BUN) in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged therapy.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) during prolonged treatment.
- Liver function tests (LFTs) if abnormalities are suspected or during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of completing the full antibiotic course to parents/guardians.
- Provide clear instructions on reconstitution and proper administration technique using the supplied measuring device.
- Advise on potential side effects, particularly gastrointestinal disturbances, and when to seek medical attention.
- Assess for history of penicillin allergy due to potential cross-reactivity.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of medication as prescribed, even if the child's symptoms improve.
- Shake the bottle well before each use of the suspension.
- Use the provided measuring device (dropper or spoon) to ensure accurate dosing.
- Store the reconstituted suspension in the refrigerator and discard any unused portion after the recommended period (typically 7-14 days).
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Generally, cefadroxil does not impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if side effects like dizziness occur, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Ensure the child maintains adequate hydration during antibiotic therapy.
- Avoid giving other antibiotics without consulting a doctor.
- Encourage good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of infection.
