Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefador 500 mg capsule contains Cefadroxil, which is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat various bacterial infections susceptible to Cefadroxil.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
General dosage for most infections: 500 mg to 1 g, once or twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. For uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 1 g once daily or 500 mg twice daily. For skin and soft tissue infections: 1 g once daily or 500 mg twice daily. For pharyngitis/tonsillitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes: 1 g once daily or 500 mg twice daily for at least 10 days.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose and/or frequency should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For creatinine clearance 25-50 mL/min, 500 mg every 12 hours; for 10-24 mL/min, 500 mg every 24 hours; for less than 10 mL/min, 500 mg every 36-48 hours.
How to Take
Cefador 500 mg capsule should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food may help to reduce potential gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes involved in the final steps of peptidoglycan synthesis, thereby preventing the formation of a stable cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within approximately 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Over 90% of the dose is excreted in the urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; approximately 90% is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefadroxil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May decrease renal excretion of Cefadroxil, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
Antibiotics, including cephalosporins, may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Loop Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May increase the risk of nephrotoxicity when co-administered with cephalosporins.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect, requiring close monitoring of INR.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially neurological effects. In case of overdose, supportive care is recommended. Hemodialysis may be useful in patients with severe renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Cefadroxil is classified as Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Lactation: Cefadroxil is excreted in human milk in small quantities. Caution should be exercised when Cefadroxil is administered to a nursing woman.

YesClinical Trials
Cefadroxil has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety in treating various bacterial infections. Ongoing research continues to monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns.
Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of renal function is recommended during prolonged therapy, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
- Periodic monitoring of complete blood count (CBC) may be considered in prolonged treatment courses.
Doctor Notes
- Assess renal function prior to and during therapy, especially in elderly patients or those with known renal impairment.
- Be aware of potential cross-sensitivity with penicillins; obtain a thorough allergy history.
- Educate patients on the importance of completing the full course of therapy to prevent resistance and recurrence.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the entire course of medication, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Do not share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
- Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially kidney disease or a history of allergies to antibiotics.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your healthcare provider immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Cefadroxil generally does not impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, some individuals may experience dizziness, which could affect these activities. Caution is advised.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain adequate hydration by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Ensure sufficient rest to aid recovery from infection.
