Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceficap 100 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: Usually 200-400 mg once daily or 100-200 mg twice daily. (Suspension is primarily for pediatric use, adjust dose from higher strength forms if needed).
Children
Children (≥6 months): 8 mg/kg/day, given as a single daily dose or in two divided doses. For Ceficap 100 mg suspension, this typically means 5 ml (100 mg) once daily or 2.5 ml (50 mg) twice daily, depending on weight and severity.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min).
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake the suspension bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring cup or syringe for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily via urine (approximately 50% unchanged drug) and bile.
Half life
3-4 hours
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food may delay absorption but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily eliminated as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe allergic reaction to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase the absorption of cefixime.
Carbamazepine
Elevated carbamazepine levels have been reported with co-administration of cefixime.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of coagulation parameters is recommended.
Storage
Unreconstituted powder: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Reconstituted suspension: Store at room temperature (15-30°C) or in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze. Discard any unused portion after the recommended period.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not significantly removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
