Overview of the medicine
Cefoxil 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. Usually for 5-10 days.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dosage may need adjustment based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance (CrCl). For CrCl 10-29 mL/min, 250 mg once daily. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 250 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
Administer orally with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when administered with food. Cefuroxime axetil is rapidly hydrolyzed to cefuroxime.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime axetil is hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa and blood to cefuroxime; not further metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or to any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration with probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%.
Oral contraceptives
Cefuroxime may affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives.
Antacids/H2-receptor antagonists
Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be considered to remove the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in nursing mothers.
