Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceftax 1 gm Injection is a broad-spectrum third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dosage is 1-2 gm once daily by IV or IM route, depending on the severity of infection. Max 4 gm/day.
Elderly
No dose adjustment generally required unless severe renal or hepatic impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min) and concomitant hepatic dysfunction.
How to Take
For intravenous (IV) use, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and infuse slowly over 30 minutes. For intramuscular (IM) use, reconstitute with lidocaine 1% solution and inject deeply into a large muscle.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid; typically within 30 minutes for IV administration.
Excretion
About 50-60% via kidneys and 40-50% via biliary/fecal route, mostly as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 6-9 hours (longer in neonates and patients with renal/hepatic impairment).
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after intramuscular (IM) administration, achieving peak plasma concentrations within 2-3 hours. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate peak levels.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone, any cephalosporin, or penicillin
- Neonates with hyperbilirubinemia
- Neonates requiring IV calcium-containing solutions
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides
Enhanced antibacterial effect, but increased risk of nephrotoxicity (monitor renal function).
Calcium-containing solutions
Fatal precipitation in neonates; contraindicated.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding due to vitamin K antagonism.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or within 6 hours if stored at room temperature, or 24 hours if refrigerated.
Overdose
Management is primarily symptomatic and supportive. Ceftriaxone is not effectively removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered safe, but monitor infant for adverse effects like diarrhea or candidiasis.

- Always consider patient's allergy history to penicillins and cephalosporins.
- Monitor renal and hepatic function during prolonged therapy.
- Avoid concomitant use with calcium-containing IV solutions, especially in neonates.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
- Report any severe diarrhea or allergic reactions immediately.
- Do not use for viral infections (e.g., common cold).
