Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceftazidime is a broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is administered parenterally.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 g IV/IM every 8-12 hours; for severe infections, 2 g IV every 8 hours. Max 6g/day.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be reduced based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Administered by slow intravenous injection (3-5 minutes), intermittent intravenous infusion (20-30 minutes), or deep intramuscular injection. Reconstitute powder with sterile water for injection.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftazidime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
