Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefurav-Plus 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic medication combining Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin, with Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. Consult a physician.
Children_2_12_years
15 mg/kg twice daily (up to a maximum of 250 mg Cefuroxime twice daily) for severe infections, or 125 mg Cefuroxime twice daily for most infections.
Children_3_months_2_years
10 mg/kg twice daily (up to a maximum of 125 mg Cefuroxime twice daily)
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. Clavulanic Acid irreversibly binds to and inactivates beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, thereby preventing the degradation of Cefuroxime and extending its antibacterial spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved approximately 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Both cefuroxime and clavulanic acid are primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is approximately 1.2-1.5 hours for cefuroxime and about 1 hour for clavulanic acid.
Absorption
Cefuroxime axetil is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Oral bioavailability is enhanced by food. Clavulanic acid is also well absorbed.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not significantly metabolized in the body. Clavulanic acid undergoes extensive metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefuroxime, Clavulanic Acid, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs serum concentrations of cefuroxime.
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with concomitant use of cephalosporins.
Oral Anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR/PT.
Antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs
May reduce the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil, potentially reducing its efficacy. Administer at least 1 hour before or after.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, store the suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard any unused portion after 7-10 days.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis can aid in the removal of cefuroxime and clavulanic acid from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefuroxime is categorized as Pregnancy Category B. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Both cefuroxime and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation and consult a doctor.
