Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefurim 125 mg Suspension contains Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in 125mg suspension strength; higher strengths (250mg, 500mg) tablets are prescribed. If used, dosage would be adjusted by a physician.
Elderly
Generally same as adult dose, but caution and dose adjustment may be required in cases of significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min. Consult physician for specific dose.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with food, to enhance absorption. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which interferes with the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell wall lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved approximately 2-3 hours after oral administration with food.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.0 to 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Absorption is enhanced when taken with food.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not significantly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, any other cephalosporin, or to any of the excipients of Cefurim suspension.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any type of beta-lactam antibacterial agents (e.g., penicillins, monobactams, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration with probenecid increases the plasma concentration and prolongs the half-life of cefuroxime.
Oral Contraceptives
Cefuroxime may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Additional non-hormonal contraception is recommended.
Antacids/H2 Blockers/PPIs
Drugs that reduce gastric acidity can decrease the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil. It should be taken at least an hour before or after such drugs.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose of cefuroxime can lead to neurological sequelae including encephalopathy, convulsions, and coma. Management is largely symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis can effectively remove cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in human milk in small quantities; caution should be exercised when Cefurim is administered to a nursing woman.
