Cefurim 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and ear, nose, and throat infections.

Dosage

Adults

250-500 mg twice daily, depending on the severity of the infection. For most infections, 500 mg twice daily is recommended.

Elderly

No special dosage adjustment is generally required unless there is significant renal impairment. Use adult dosage with caution.

Renal_impairment

Dosage adjustment may be necessary for severe renal impairment. Consult a physician for specific recommendations based on creatinine clearance.

How to Take

Take the tablet orally, preferably with food, to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

Mechanism of Action

Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.

Side Effects

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.

Drug Interactions

Warfarin

Increased anticoagulant effect may occur. Monitor INR.

Probenecid

Concomitant administration of probenecid significantly increases and prolongs the serum concentration of cefuroxime.

Oral Contraceptives

Cefuroxime may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Advise patients to use additional barrier contraception.

Antacids/H2-receptor antagonists

Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may reduce the absorption of cefuroxime. Administer at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Overdose

Overdose of cephalosporins can cause cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is supportive, and hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Cefuroxime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is excreted in human milk in small quantities; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor.
