Description
Overview of the medicine
Cemix-3 contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200-400 mg once daily, or 200 mg every 12 hours depending on the severity of infection. For gonorrhea, a single dose of 400 mg.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless renal function is impaired.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, dose should be 75% of the standard dose. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, dose should be 50% of the standard dose.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it may be taken with food.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Mainly through kidneys (about 50% of absorbed dose) and biliary excretion.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed.
Metabolism
Limited metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillin. Patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin should be monitored carefully.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time (INR) and risk of bleeding.
Nifedipine
Increased Cefixime absorption.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels reported with concomitant use.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage, hemodialysis (not significantly removed), and general supportive measures.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
