Description
Overview of the medicine
Compiron is a combination preparation of Iron Polymaltose Complex, Folic Acid, and Zinc, used to treat and prevent various types of anemia, especially iron deficiency anemia, often associated with pregnancy, lactation, and growth.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 tablet daily, or as directed by physician. In severe cases, 2 tablets daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment mentioned, use with caution.
How to Take
Compiron tablets should be taken orally, preferably after meals to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Syrup can be taken directly or mixed with water.
Mechanism of Action
Iron Polymaltose Complex (IPC) is a macromolecular complex of ferric hydroxide and polymaltose. It ensures controlled iron absorption and causes fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to traditional iron salts. Folic acid is essential for erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation), purine and pyrimidine synthesis. Zinc is a vital trace element involved in numerous enzymatic reactions and immune function, often deficient alongside iron.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Improvement in symptoms usually within 2-3 weeks, full hematological response in 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Iron excreted mainly in feces; Folic acid excreted in urine.
Half life
Iron is largely stored; Folic acid half-life is around 3-6 hours.
Absorption
Iron Polymaltose Complex is absorbed via an active mechanism, resulting in a controlled uptake and avoids saturation of plasma protein carriers. Folic acid is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Zinc absorption varies.
Metabolism
Iron is utilized in erythropoiesis; Folic acid is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component
- •Hemochromatosis and other iron overload syndromes
- •Non-iron deficiency anemia (e.g., megaloblastic anemia without iron deficiency, hemolytic anemia)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Reduced iron absorption.
Tetracyclines
Reduced absorption of both iron and tetracycline.
Thyroid hormones
Reduced absorption of thyroid hormones.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, metabolic acidosis, cardiovascular collapse. Management involves gastric lavage, supportive care, and chelation therapy with deferoxamine in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to prevent and treat anemia, but use under medical supervision.
