Description
Overview of the medicine
Dancel 200 mg Tablet contains Etodolac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For acute pain: 200-400 mg every 6-8 hours as needed. For chronic conditions like osteoarthritis/rheumatoid arthritis: 300 mg two to three times daily or 400-500 mg twice daily. The 200 mg tablet would be used accordingly, e.g., two tablets (400 mg) twice daily for chronic conditions or one tablet (200 mg) 1-2 times daily for mild acute pain.
Elderly
Use with caution; lower doses may be necessary due to potential for decreased renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Monitor renal function closely; dose adjustment may be required. Not recommended for severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food or milk to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Swallow whole with a glass of water, do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Etodolac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever. By reducing prostaglandin production, Etodolac alleviates these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief usually within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (about 60% as metabolites) and feces (about 10%).
Half life
Approximately 6-7 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via hydroxylation and glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to etodolac or any component of the formulation
- History of asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
- Severe uncontrolled heart failure
- Active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer disease
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Increased plasma lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate levels, leading to toxicity.
Diuretics and ACE inhibitors
Reduced hypotensive effect and increased risk of renal impairment.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Management involves supportive and symptomatic treatment, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if recent ingestion. No specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C (first and second trimesters), Category D (third trimester). Avoid in late pregnancy due to potential for premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Use with caution during lactation; excreted in breast milk in small amounts.
