Description
Overview of the medicine
Deflux 5 mg Suspension contains Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, used for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, particularly in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment.
Children_6_14_years
5 mg (one teaspoonful) once daily in the evening.
How to Take
Deflux 5 mg Suspension should be taken orally once daily in the evening. It can be taken with or without food. For asthma, it should be taken in the evening. For allergic rhinitis, the time of administration may be individualized to suit patient needs.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively blocks the CysLT1 receptor, inhibiting the actions of cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4). These leukotrienes are potent pro-inflammatory eicosanoids that contribute to bronchoconstriction, mucus secretion, vascular permeability, and eosinophil recruitment in allergic diseases and asthma.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement generally seen within one day of initiation for asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the feces via bile (approximately 86%); less than 0.2% is excreted in urine.
Half life
Plasma half-life ranges from approximately 2.7 to 5.5 hours in healthy adults.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with mean peak plasma concentration (Cmax) achieved in approximately 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes CYP2C8, CYP3A4, and CYP2C9. Metabolites are pharmacologically inactive.
