Description
Overview of the medicine
E-Hexin (Ambroxol Hydrochloride) is a mucolytic agent used to treat acute and chronic respiratory diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport. It helps to thin and clear mucus from the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 tablet (30 mg) 2-3 times daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dose; caution in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced or the interval between doses extended in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. It is recommended to take it with food if gastrointestinal upset occurs. Ensure adequate fluid intake to aid mucolytic action.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol increases the production of serous mucus components, reduces the viscosity of bronchial secretions, and stimulates ciliary activity, thereby enhancing mucociliary clearance. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within approximately 30 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally, with approximately 90% of the dose eliminated within 5 days.
Half life
Terminal elimination half-life is approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver, primarily to dibromanthranilic acid and glucuronides.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol Hydrochloride or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients with rare hereditary conditions of fructose intolerance (for syrup formulations).
Drug Interactions
Antitussives (cough suppressants)
Concomitant use with antitussives is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of bronchial secretions due to inhibition of the cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin, Doxycycline)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of these antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ambroxol is generally well-tolerated, even at high doses. Symptoms of overdose may include mild diarrhea and restlessness. Management involves symptomatic treatment and discontinuation of the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ambroxol should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. Use with caution in the second and third trimesters and during lactation only if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. Consult a doctor before use.
