Description
Overview of the medicine
Emodol 0.5% Eye Drop is a topical anti-inflammatory agent used to relieve pain, irritation, and inflammation in the eye, often associated with post-operative conditions or allergic reactions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2-4 times daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch. Instill the prescribed number of drops without touching the eye or any surface with the dropper tip. Close eye gently for 1-2 minutes to allow absorption. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Emodol acts by inhibiting specific inflammatory pathways, reducing the production of prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators in the ocular tissues. This leads to a decrease in the signs and symptoms of inflammation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 30-60 minutes for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Metabolites are primarily eliminated via ocular fluids, with negligible systemic excretion.
Half life
Local ocular half-life is short, requiring frequent dosing for sustained effect.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ocular administration. Primarily acts at the site of application.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized locally within ocular tissues by esterases.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Emodol or any component of the formulation.
- Acute viral, fungal, or mycobacterial ocular infections (unless specifically indicated for antiviral action).
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic preparations
If using multiple eye drops, administer them at least 5 minutes apart to prevent wash-out and ensure proper absorption.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Animal studies (if applicable) may indicate risks, but human data are limited. Consult a doctor before use; only use if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.
