Description
Overview of the medicine
Emoxil 125 mg Suspension contains Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medicine is commonly prescribed for ear infections, sinusitis, throat infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adult dosage is usually 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, or 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours. This 125 mg/5ml suspension is primarily for pediatric use.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in patients with severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer using a calibrated spoon or oral syringe.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged by the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion) into the urine.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food. Bioavailability is approximately 70-90%.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily forms inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- •Infectious mononucleosis (may cause a skin rash)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, leading to increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, particularly in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
May reduce methotrexate clearance, increasing toxicity; monitor methotrexate levels.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), fluid and electrolyte imbalance. In rare cases, crystalluria and renal impairment have been reported. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential adverse effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
