Description
Overview of the medicine
Esogut 5 mg Suspension contains Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid production. It's typically prescribed for conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, especially in pediatric patients or those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not standard for adults; typical adult doses are 20 mg or 40 mg.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required in elderly patients, though caution is advised due to potential for reduced hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with impaired renal function.
How to Take
Administer orally at least one hour before a meal. For suspension, empty the contents of the sachet into a glass containing 15 mL of water, stir, and drink immediately. Do not chew or crush granules.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that irreversibly blocks the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells. This action inhibits the final step in gastric acid secretion, significantly reducing both basal and stimulated acid production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the urine (approximately 80%) and feces (approximately 20%) as metabolites, with negligible unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours. Bioavailability is about 64% after a single dose, increasing to 89% with repeated once-daily administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme system, mainly by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles, or any component of the formulation
- •Concomitant use with Nelfinavir
Drug Interactions

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Limited experience with overdose. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal disturbances. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; no specific antidote.
