Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexona 120 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It helps reduce sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and skin itching or rashes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 120 mg once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 180 mg once daily (use Fexofenadine 180 mg tablet if available).
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required in elderly patients, unless renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
In patients with impaired renal function, a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended for seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It blocks histamine, a natural substance produced by the body during an allergic reaction, thereby preventing and relieving allergy symptoms without significantly crossing the blood-brain barrier, which minimizes sedation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 10%).
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentrations reached in 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized (approximately 5% hepatic metabolism).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine or any components of the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase Fexofenadine plasma levels, but no clinically significant increase in adverse effects has been reported.
Aluminum- or Magnesium-containing Antacids
May decrease Fexofenadine absorption. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove Fexofenadine from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
